Tetrion licensing policy for mathema

Effective 2026-09-07. This policy accompanies the Business Source License 1.1 that mathema is distributed under (LICENSE.md in the repository); the license, including its Additional Use Grant, governs, and this policy states how Tetrion Ltd applies it.

Free-use thresholds (the Additional Use Grant's floors)

Production use is free of charge for any Organisation meeting any of the grant's conditions:

  1. total Organisation revenue below USD 10,000,000 in the most recently completed fiscal year;
  2. use in connection with at most three code repositories across the Organisation;
  3. research, teaching, personal, or other non-commercial use;
  4. evaluation, for up to 90 days from the Organisation's first use.

"Organisation" is defined in the grant: the legal entity together with every entity that controls it, is controlled by it, or is under common control with it. The grant never permits providing third parties a product or service having substantially the same function as mathema or as a Tetrion product built on it.

Cure period

An Organisation that ceases to qualify (a revenue floor crossed at a fiscal year end, a fourth repository, an evaluation running past 90 days) has 60 days from the date it ceased to qualify to either obtain a commercial license from Tetrion or end production use. Good-faith production use during that window is treated as licensed. Rights under the license terminate only when the window closes with neither having happened.

Conversion schedule

Each released version's Change Date is four years from that version's release date, computed at release time and written into that release's LICENSE.md. On its Change Date a version converts to the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later and every restriction above stops applying to that version. (AGPL-3.0-or-later satisfies the license's Covenants of Licensor: it is compatible with GPL Version 3.0, a later version of GPL Version 2.0.)
